The need to belong to and identify with a peer group is another key task of adolescent development. Peer groups are essential in supporting other areas of development such as identity development and sexuality.
The strong desire to fit in with a peer group can lead to feelings of insecurity and a need to conform to the peer group. It becomes critical for teenagers to be accepted by their peers.
Most parents can recognize their teen's heavy use of phones, e-mail, and internet messenger services to stay connected with friends. In doing so, your teen is not only building relationships, but sorting out his/her identity and sense of self.
Parents may notice that teenagers are uncomfortable in their presence, especially when around their peer group. For example, teens may become embarrassed from being kissed by their parents in front of their friends or uncomfortable walking with their parents in the mall.
