Tip: Be honest and open

Take the time and talk to your teen about dating and sexuality. Research shows that the more open and honest you are with your teen, the more he or she will trust you and communicate with you about his or her own dating and sexuality.

Teens whose parents speak openly about sex are less likely to engage in dangerous sexual experimentation.

Meaningful discussions about sexuality include positive messages about your own attitudes and values. Discussions can also include giving advice and warnings about the consequences of teenage sexual activity.
