Teens are often misrepresented in popular media. We often only remember the sensational or dramatic stories that are broadcasted. Media coverage often reflects drug use, heavy drinking, violence, and underage sex occurring at rates far greater than they actually are. This can promote misconceptions about your teenager and influence how you react to your teenager's behaviour and actions.
Parents can often make the assumption that their teenager will become involved in high-risk behaviour. Such assumptions can impact the level of trust between parent and teen.
