Remember you are a role model and your teen is watching closer than you may think. Watch your own use. Are you setting a good example for your teen?
Be knowledgeable about the facts (not the myths) of drugs and alcohol.
Be open to your teen's concerns. Encourage him or her to discuss alcohol and drugs openly with you.
Ask general, non-threatening questions about friends and classmates - don't appear shocked or angry if they say they know someone who has tried smoking or drinking. Ask them about their feelings about this and what they would do if they were asked to smoke or drink.
