Step 3: Reflective listening

Reflective listening involves being a mirror and listening with a third ear to what could be underneath the surface behaviour and/or emotion. By practicing reflective listening, you are reflecting your teen’s feelings and the circumstances of those feelings.

Use phrases like

  • I wonder if…
  • I might be wrong, but…
  • I get the impression that…
  • Could it be that…
  • Do you feel…
  • Sounds like you…
