Step 3: Reflective listening (continued)
Follow these dos and don’ts:
- Don’t try to force your teen to share feelings
- Don’t ask too many questions
- Do reflect pleasant feelings
- Don’t overuse reflective listening (for example, reflective
listening is not relevant for requests to do everyday routines
or chores)
- Don’t assume you know for certain what your teen is
feeling; ask your teen
Reflective listening may be a poor choice when
- you have insufficient time.
- you have already decided the outcome.
- you only need factual information.
- you own the problem.
- your teen is unwilling to talk.
