One way to negotiate is to explore alternatives. Exploring alternatives
lets you and your teen look at options available for solving problems.
Use these five steps to explore alternatives:
Understand and clarify the problem.
Explore alternatives through brainstorming.
Evaluate proposed alternatives.
Choose a solution.
Obtain or make a commitment and set a time for evaluation.
Exploring alternatives also works when reflective listening or
I-messages do not solve the problem.
